1953 in a small lab in San Diego, California, the fledgling Rocket Chemical Company, with three employees, sought to develop a line of rust-prevention solvents and degreasers for use in the aerospace industry. It took 40 tries to get their moisture-wicking formula right, but on the 40th try, they did it. WD-40 appeared. WD-40 stands for "Water Displacement", the 40th formula. This name is taken directly from the laboratory notes taken by the chemist who created this product. The first company to use WD-40 commercially was Convair, an aerospace contractor, to protect the outer coating of the Atlas Missile from rust and corrosion. The product worked so well that several workers secretly took several cans of WD-40 from the factory and put them in their lunch boxes to use the product themselves at home. Few years later, Rocket Chemical Company founder and president Norm Larsen experimented with putting WD-40 in aerosol cans, thinking that consumers might also find ways to use the product in their homes and garages.
